The Mages have discovered how to control Fire and Water so created 2 clans Fire clan and the Water clan and these clans were split into 6 smaller clans until the Great Mage took control of all and now when the Great Mage dies the 6 clans send there best Mages into battle where the winner becomes the Great Mage until there death.
