There is a seemingly infinite array of things the Star Trek franchise has done to affect modern day culture, from setting an archetype of what space faring science fiction would look like, to inspiring a whole host of technology used every day, from computer tablets to communicators. When Gene Roddenberry first created his show, he had a very particular vision for what he wanted, including a massive amount of cultural diversity that is rare to see even today, let alone in the 1960s. He also had a lot of requirements for the design of Starfleet starships, coming up with a list of four rules that the designers had to strictly follow.
