Magic: The Gathering is no stranger to crossovers. Over the past few months, Marvel, Ghostbusters, and Baldur’s Gate 3 have all received the Secret Lair treatment, with the promise of SpongeBob SquarePants still to come. The series isn’t afraid to delve into pop culture, whether that’s TV, movies, or video games, and anything is possible.
While nothing is safe from Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast, the company has yet to combine one of the most critically acclaimed video games of all time with its trading card series—Elden Ring. So, one Reddit user decided that if Wizards aren’t going to, they will instead.
Elden Ring Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair Imagined By Fan
Reddit user Ric_Adbur shared 18 Magic: The Gathering x Elden Ring crossover cards on the Elden Ring subreddit, saying it took them a year’s worth of work— and you can see why.
Each card is meticulously crafted with some of Elden Ring’s most iconic characters, items, classes, and story beats. The cards are based on existing MTG designs, with Marika Conquers Death and Blasphemous Act using the Lord of the Rings set’s frames, Drake Warrior Igon using Throne of Eldrain, a set which features Giant Killer, and the Class Enchantments using the sketch frame from Modern Horizons 2. The Malenia cards are also particularly impressive. The two are double-faced, with the white side transforming into the red one, depicting Malenia’s transformation from the Blade of Miquella to the Goddess of Rot.
The attention to detail in matching each design to an existing Magic card is simply excellent.
Last year, another Reddit user had a similar idea, crafting their own set of Elden Ring x Magic: The Gathering cards from scratch. Although there are fewer of them, each of the cards was unique and designed to be playable in the real-world TCG. Alongside the Elden Ring designs, another fan
recently designed their own Discworld Secret Lair, using iconic characters from Terry Pratchett’s book series.
Elden Ring
With worldbuilding from Game of Thrones scribe George R.R. Martin and developed by FromSoftware, Elden Ring is a masterpiece in what has become known as the ‘Soulslike’ genre of action role-playing games.
