Ghostface made a thrilling entrance into Mortal Kombat 1 today, and fans have been on the edge of their seats, waiting to discover who’s behind the mask.
NetherRealm Studios has made the revelation straightforward. When you’re up against the Woodsboro Killer, executing a fatality or fatal blow will unmask Billy Loomis. However, fans have noted that he bears a striking resemblance to Johnny in a wig.
Loomis was one of the original duo of killers. As Sidney Prescott’s boyfriend (and arguably, Stu’s), he was the mastermind behind the first Ghostface killing spree. It’s only appropriate that he’s the one behind the mask in this new crossover.
Numerous Scream References Are Included
NetherRealm Studios clearly holds the Scream franchise in high regard, as evidenced by the intro fights. Not only do they include dialogue references to the films, but Ghostface also uses the same voice modulator as Billy (and other killers in the series) to achieve that distinctive, chilling Roger Jackson voice.
In the intro dialogue, if two Ghostfaces clash (which, as of Scream 6, isn’t unheard of), they’ll even inquire about each other’s favourite horror film. Naturally, Ghostface’s answer is Stab, the fictional retelling of the Woodsboro murders within the Scream universe.

One of the most creative callbacks is a fatality where Johnny Cage loses control of Ghostface while playing Mortal Kombat 1, only to be killed by another Ghostface behind him on the sofa in ‘real life’.
This is likely a nod to the meta, film-within-a-film-within-a-film opening of Scream 4, which layers Stab upon Stab upon the actual film.
Adding to the theory of Billy being the one behind the mask, Rain has a chance to say that horror films turned Ghostface into a psycho. In response, he paraphrases Billy’s line from the original film: “Movies don’t make psychos, they make psychos more creative.”
What’s particularly intriguing about this callback is that it’s delivered by Jackson, whereas in the movie, the line is spoken by Skeet Ulrich.
